Intellectual property law deals with the rules for securing and enforcing legal rights to inventions, designs, and artistic works. Just as the law protects ownership of personal property and real estate, so too does it protect the exclusive control of intangible assets. Copyright and rights related to copyright form an integral part of intellectual property law. They form main instruments to safeguard protection of creative works, artistic performances, musical and audio-visual recordings, radio and television broadcasting, databases and other rights and legitimate interests of rights holders.

The basic instrument for copyright protection in Slovakia is the Copyright Act (n.185/2015 Coll.) which became effective as of January 1st 2016.
